Founded in 1988, IDA is a nonprofit organization that strives to reduce light pollution worldwide by conducting programs and activities that promote better lighting practices, raise public awareness, and encourage responsible legislation and public policy concerning outdoor illumination. In pursuing its mission, IDA works with astronomers, ecologists, lighting professionals, and communities to realize sustainable solutions to the challenge of light pollution.
As part of its efforts, IDA operates its International Dark Sky Places (IDSPlaces) program, which seeks to promote the preservation of dark night skies in public places around the world. IDSPlaces specifically targets communities, parks, and reserves. Those wishing to receive an IDSPlaces designation must submit an application and meet a minimum set of criteria for sky quality and natural darkness.
Communities that receive designations are not only required to exhibit a dedication to the preservation of a healthy dark sky through the implementation of lighting codes, education programs, and citizen support, but they must also adhere to a set of standards that will ensure that their skies are protected for years to come through lighting plans and zoning directives. Ultimately, the goal of the IDSPlaces program is to recognize areas with exceptional night skies and encourage the protection of those areas for future generations.
