Founded in 1965, Malki Museum is the oldest Native American-established museum in California. Throughout the years, the museum has featured hundreds of Cahuilla artifacts and provided a wide range of educational opportunities to its visitors. Moreover, Malki Museum cultivates tribal heritage through a number of annual events, including the Kewet Celebration.
The museum holds its annual fundraising Fiesta (or Kewet, in the Cahuilla language) at the end of Memorial Day weekend. The event features a wide variety of cultural events and artifacts. On May 24, 2015, the museum held its 51st annual Kewet Celebration, drawing hundreds of visitors from across the Southwest. Throughout the day, guests could participate in complimentary arts-and-crafts activities and purchase jewelry and food from local vendors. Accompanied by traditional drummers, members from a number of local Native American Indian tribes performed cultural dances and bird songs for visitors.
