Since 2005, the Mojave Desert Land Trust has worked to maintain areas of biological and cultural significance within the Mojave Desert, and to educate the people of the area about the benefits and value of preserving California’s desert environment. One program through which the land trust works to protect the natural beauty of the desert is the Wildlife Linkage Campaign.
Wildlife linkages are natural corridors between large, open environments that many species use to migrate, forage, or expand to new areas. The Wildlife Linkage Campaign has spent $4.2 million to preserve the wildlife linkage between Joshua Tree National Park and 29 Palms Marine Base. This region is home to a wide variety of animals, including bighorn sheep, bobcats, kit foxes, desert tortoises, and golden eagles, among many others.
